The fading Kuchipudi

Anjana Velaga writes about Kuchipudi, a cultural tradition that might face extinction.

Kuchipudi, like Kathakali is also a dance-drama tradition and derives its name from the vilage of Kuchipudi in the Southern State of Andra Pradesh. In recent years, it has evolved as a solo dance for the concert platform and is performed by women, though like Kathakali it was formerly the preserve of men. The female roles were enacted by men and even today, the tradition boasts of gifted male dancers enacting female roles with such consummate artistry that hardly anyone would notice them as male dancers.

My Bharatanatyam dancemaster in Madras was one of a few who had originally learned and mastered Kuchipudi (being from Andhra), but later mastered Bharatanatyam and taught that almost exclusively. Evidently that’s where the money is, or has gone; to the extent that even Telugu NRI girls now learn BN more often than Kuchipudi because BN is most commonly taught abroad. I would love to see both Kuchipudi and Odissi begin to rival the Bharatanatyam hegemony at “cultural shows.”
