Hindustani words in Gulf Arabic dialects

Lucky Fatima discovers the words that found their way into the Khaleeji dialects in the UAE, much before the mass influx of South Asians to the Gulf.

At the time they would have come to the Gulf there was no political distinction between Hindi and Urdu in the modern sense, so we could say the words are from “Hindustani.” These are old words, and are not recent entries into the Khaleej; they are in the Khaleeji dialects because of centuries of historical travel and trade relations, and do not have to do with the contemporary mass influx of Sub-continental professionals and laborers in the Gulf.

That was a very interesting article.

    Although,

darwazeh and keema are farsi origin. Keema in farsi refers to thinly sliced meat, whereas in south asia it came to mean grounded meat.

alu could possibly be farsi origin, where it refered to a fruit (peach, I think)

the ‘z’ in mez suggests farsi origin.

The interesting question is which words went from farsi to urdu to khaleej, as opposed to going from farsi directly to khaleej. would be really tough to determine.

Also, much earlier, farsi itself borrowed and built on arabic origin words…’dar’ of darwazeh is a potential example…
