In the Name of Periyar

Reality Check offers a compilation of reports from Tamil vernacular press on the attacks on temples after a Periyar statue was damaged.

(EV Ramasami Naicker) had his positives, but he also broke several idols and garlanded statues of Ram with slippers. He also virulently hated brahmins and hindu temples in particular. Now his organization, Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) wants to install a life size statue of him right outside the main tower of the world renowned temple on Dec 16th…Either way, this arguably provocative move ruffled the feathers of hindus (of all castes) . This led to some miscreants damaging the statue.

while Arasubalraj explains the deeper roots of opposition to the installation of Periyar’s statue in front of the Srirangam temple.

Does the Hindu stalwarts protested with such ferocity when the past Jayalalitha Govt banned the animal sacrifice in so-called ‘Hindu’ Temples ‘hurting the sentiments’ of so-called ‘Hindus’?. So it’s not the ‘Hindu’ sentiment, but the ‘Brahmin sentiments’ are getting hurt since the Srirangam Temple falls under the Agama framework of Temples which are unquestionable Brahminic power centers for centuries.

    @Not a supremacist:
    What makes you think anyone should take your accusation seriously? Rather than throw accusations around, try countering posts with facts and logic.

    I dont want to dignify blogs like this.Srirangam has a complex history.It is a temple town.Historically the tamil kings,vellalas and kalla chieftains were the greatest supporters of temple culture, which is essentially dravidian.Srirangam has always counted powerful non brahmins among its patrons.The paasurams (hymns) of alwars have a central place (perhaps the pivotal place)in its worship.i hope jokers like you desist from commenting on every topic giving whatever slant that comes your mind.

    xyz, if you want to portray Srirangam as a dravidian temple, I won’t agree with you fully. I do agree that, historically, it was patronized by everyone. In fact, even the renovation was completed with the help of people like Ilayaraja, etc. However, no one can deny the complete brahmin dominance of the temple. I am from Srirangam and I am a brahmin. I know about the brahmin dominance in every aspect of the temple over there. If you claim that it is not the case, it is quite laughable.

    Sharan Sharma, anyone can read his blog to know who it is. If you can’t see it, it is your problem. Sorry, I can’t help you in this regard.

    The intention of putting up the two posts was to present two sides of the picture. I would request any commentators to comment on the respective blogs and not here. Any further comments here will be deleted. Thanks for your cooperation.
