Black Friday reviews

Anurag Kashyap’s movie “Black Friday”, based on the 1993 Bombay Bomb Blasts, opened – finally – in theatres today.

Script-writer Vivek Kumar, at Passion For Cinema (where Mr. Kashyap also blogs), found it intense

It is not excessively gory, yet it tells the extent of the damage. It’s a human story, and humans are prone to be heores (sic) sometimes, villians the others, cause they are humans and it is the story of the people who planned and executed the whole scenario and the people who went about solving the mystery and the mayhem and both seem to be just going about their job.

Filmiholic recommends seeing it

See it. This is a powerful, tightly made film. It doesn’t indulge in any flashy grandstanding, but it doesn’t need to, because it narrates the story so succinctly, leaving aside any excess.

However, Meetu thought that for a serious movie of this caliber, a clearer purpose was needed.

Also, what exactly is the aim here? Is it to tell the world, “this is how ammunition is smuggled into India, this is how terrorists were trained, and this is how it was planted”? There is nothing shocking about the answers to any of these questions. Obviously, if there were bomb blasts, someone-somewhere got the raw material and organized the whole operation. Is the aim, then, to tell both the Hindu and Muslim fascists how this is not what God wants? If it was so easy to convince the fundamentalists, then wouldn’t half the problems in the world be over by now?

i have seen a downloaded version. it must be great to watch in a movie theatre. the music given by ‘indian ocean’ is aflaatoon. ‘allah ke bande’, bharam bhaap ke’ and ‘badshah in jail’ are the best ones.
aditya srivastav, kaykay and pavan malhotra (i dont know why he doesn’t get many films) as well as the other actors are really really good. i had written ‘nothing’ about it here http://quitsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/11/movies.html

    great going blogbharti!

Anish – thanks for the comment.

I was lucky to have seen this movie a couple of years back in a film festival. Believe me, it’s a completely different experience seeing it on screen. And are you referring to “Bande” by Indian Ocean (which I think goes something like arre ruk ja re bande, arre thamm ja re bande..) or the equally brilliant “Allah ke bande” by Kailash Kher (from Waisa bhi hota hai, part 2?) ?

And yes, the performances are just brilliant. I thought Pavan Malhotra was a tour-de-force…agree, I really don’t know why he’s not acting in more movies..but that probably holds true for Aditya Srivastava whose pretty much typecast now as the cop or the goon.

Do see it on screen if you can.
