Jamster wonders if flyovers help to ease up traffic jams.
First up, I’d like to debunk Govar’s theory that flyovers will help decongest the situation. Case in point, the flyovers constructed at Hebbal and Silk Board Junction Bangalore around 3-4 yrs ago. While the situation before these flyovers were constructed were nothing short of horrible, once these flyovers have come up, traffic has more than doubled on these roads and net result, these flyovers are pretty much not serving the purpose of providing commuters with the signal-free, or jam-free traffic experience they would’ve expected once the flyovers were complete.
I thought flyovers just get you from one traffic jam to another, only quicker.

You have answered the question yourself. Before the flyovers came up, the situation was “nothing short of horrible”. Now that the traffic has more than doubled, they are appearing inadequate. Had they not been constructed, what would have happened?
The problem here, as in most cases is that we in India are always doing things reactively…after a ‘crises’ leaves us with little choice. Then too, we do only what is required to overcome the immediate problem. The Chinese, on the other hand, like the Americans did earlier, do things pro actively for a situation that is likely to arise in the ‘distant’ future.
Hi Vinod – Thanks for the comment. Actually it was the blogger who I linked to who said “nothing short of horrible”. Valid comparison between us and India, I’d have to agree with you.
Hi there Vinod,
While I completely agree with point that we Indians are more ‘reactive’ than ‘proactive’ when it comes to situations such as Infrastructure Development, I honestly believe it has got more historical connotations than is readily visible to the naked eye.
We Indians have always believed in being happy with what we have and not aiming for the sky. It is only nowadays (probably post liberalization) that we Indians have realized that we can be world-beaters in pretty much whatever we do. And in this hurry to make up for lost time, we have somehow forgotten to leave behind this ‘Can I make this happen?’ kind of menatality.
Cheers………..Jam
