Taxi drivers in Mumbai

can be an interesting lot.

Ideasmith thanks Rakesh Mishra who, she believes, represents the true face of Mumbai.

Rakesh Mishra doesn’t like the rain anymore than other Mumbaikers do. But he doesn’t blame the BMC. He thinks that picking up other people’s garbage is a thankless enough job. You or I won’t do it. Why harass someone who is willing to do it, even if they want payment in return? It’s our filth that they are picking. What’s more, when we produce so much filth and don’t even bother throwing it in the right place, why blame the collection?

Harini wishes she could make a documentary on the taxi driver she encountered.

A a few weeks ago, however, i did catch one (taxi) from Vashi back home. The driver was an old Sardarji — must have been about 75. Had fascinating eyes - a wonderful voice and a great sense of narrative. He had got year some time after independence and started working here driving his cab. The Bombay that he knew and the Mumbai that it has become — are two different places.
