There is a copy of the same article available on his home page as well, in case the text is a little garbled up on the wordpress:

Modern network applications typically contain three or more layers, as well as a team the size of the development project, he or she can focus on one or several levels – or may need more cross-disciplinary role. For example, in one or two person team, a developer can focus on technology, sent to the client, such as the HTML, JavaScript, CSS and server-side frameworks (such as Perl, Python, and Ruby, PHP, Java,. Net) is used to providing content and client-side scripting. At the same time, other developers may focus on the interaction between the server-side framework for network servers and database systems. In addition, given the size of their organization, these developers may be close co-operation, web design, web production, project managers, software architects, or database administrator – or it can be used as web design, project management, and responsible for such task to manage their own databases.

Siddharth has a good set of arguments about how Yahoo is gradually losing (or has already lost) its foothold in the end-user free email space:

I had registered my gmail account for many job sites while I was searching the job for my brother. One by one I started marking them as spam. And it has worked like wonders. At one point I had thought that I will never be able to use my gmail account for anything productive. But now, I use it as all the mails I marked and from same senders (and probably more based on the spam logic) go straight to the spam folder.
Yahoo just fools the end user here. There are many mails I mark as spam. It moves the mails to the spam folder. But it doesnt implement the simplest rule of spam filter that at least from the same sender, all other mails should go to spam folder. I keep getting mails from same senders again and again. Hats off to the coders of Yahoo (where art thou feet??).

Consider this a meta-blog about those two popular themes of many of our blogs. Here is an except from their latest post about an innovative way of advertising:

This guy walked into a book store and went to a section which said “Search Engine Marketing”. He then browsed through a few books, before hitting on this one particularly interesting book. Before buying it, he just quickly scanned through the book to ensure good quality. And right at the centre of the book, he saw the visiting card of the CEO of a startup for Search Engine Marketing. He bought the book, and then called the CEO.

On telling the CEO how he had come across the information, the CEO told him that he had put his card in every single bookstore which had that book in Mumbai. He then interviewed this guy, and in 1 week’s time, he had joined that company in his first ever job.

This time around, we can try to see more transparency and visibility of the elections coming up in May by the multitude of electronic media and tools available. One such initiative is VoteReport India, where you can submit your own story, SMS, twitter feed, etc. and it all gets organized into a single point of information where someone else can track how “fair” the elections are going. Here is how you can get involved:

Thank you for asking. We can use as much help as we can get, so feel free to volunteer.

Step 1: Evangelize It

We would encourage you to spend some time at our website at votereport.in to get a sense of what we are doing. If you like what we are doing, please join the Vote Report India community at Twitter (@votereportindia), Facebook, Orkut, SMSGupShup or Google Groups and subscribe to our blog. If you have a blog or a website, please consider writing about Vote Report India and displaying our banners (200X200 and 150X150) on your blog or website.

Step 2: Use It

The next step is to actually use the Vote Report India platform. Please read our reporting guide to see how to send reports on irregularities in the Indian elections.

Step 3: Volunteer

If you have some time to spare, we’d welcome your help. Volunteer opportunities are available in many areas. Please contact the leads within each area.

Atanu has posted a very interesting article about the “effectiveness, efficiency, affordability” and ease of use of tools in general and then applies that analysis to the way Information Technology (IT) is being treated as a panacea for all diseases ailing India:

Even if we have determined that a CAT scanner is the tool required in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, we still have to address the question of affordability. And finally, we need to have the expertise to operate the scanner and interpret the results. The ability to use a tool matters.

So in summary, technology sounds great but has value only in the utility of the tools it provides, and this utility is contingent on the relevance, effectiveness and efficiency of the tool. Furthermore, affordability has to be considered. Lastly, the ability to properly use a tool is a prerequisite to deriving utility from it.

Do read that post and the other posts linking back to it — very interesting discussions there.

Greatbong lampoons the announcement of the $10 laptop by the government, with some hilarious links:

So what if the $10 laptop is worth $30? So what if it is actually $100 and the concerned Indian official did not read one “zero” as it was mistyped —after all what’s a few zeroes between friends, especially when the zero represents representatives of the Indian government. So what if the laptop is not a laptop at all but a hyped up storage device,a glorified pen drive? And finally so what that Ramar Pillai could not make gasoline from water?

Over at the mutants‘ blog, though, they say the intentions behind the device were different and it serves “those” purposes well:

However, it is important to understand the purpose of the device, which seems to have been nagged by an identity crisis ever since its initial announcement. While the Sakshat does a bad job of being a laptop, it does make sense if you consider the intentions behind the device. The Sakshat has been designed as a pure educational gadget to offer downloadable lessons and make online textbooks easily accessible. The aim was to set up electronic classrooms and make online textbooks freely available for download across 18000 colleges and 4 000 universities across India. That sounds good doesn’t it? However, it was projected as a computing device, which we now know, it hardly is!

I too will be curious about what use this is put to, if at all. In a country where a majority of the places do not have a school with four walls and a blackboard, let alone a constant electricity supply and a computer, it is just fanciful thinking that distributing a glorified pen drive will solve all problems. To me, it is like hiring a lot of sailors in the middle of a vast desert and expecting everybody else to learn swimming because of they’re here. I would have been much happier if the government had hired one teacher per 20 laptops for a year and paid them well.

Both are creativity at work . People do make music and software for money. But the quality of something that they make for the sheer pleasure of creating something is so much more awesome !!

Crappy metal bands are clobbered off the scene quickly. They are also welcomed back with equal speed when they produce awesome music. Pretty much the same thing happens in the FOSS world. KDE 4.0 was bashed and trampled on without mercy. But everyone welcomed KDE 4.2 and all the KDE 4.0 bad blood were forgotten when they saw the improvements they made.

Community is central in FOSS and Metal. Without them, the creative output goes unused, and that loss of purpose of art is discouraging to the bands/developers.

Community contributes by generating and maintaining a large amount of meta information. Help documentation and wikis etc for FOSS, lyrics, fan sites, musical tabs, wikis etc for Metal.

RJ argues “that the real issue is a lack of a proper regulatory structure in India with which to assess the completeness, integrity and accuracy of financial data, and internal controls over financial reporting”:

If the global economic downturn wasn’t bad enough, incidents such as the Bernard Madoff issue, and now the Satyam scandal can’t have helped matters much in providing confidence to the already skeptical investor. India’s fourth-largest IT company admitted to “irregularities” in its books, thanks to the imaginative accounting practices of its Chairman Ramalinga Raju. The company, which ironically received the Global Peacock Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance, first raised investors’ concerns with the apparent bid to acquire Maytas Infra, a construction company owned by Raju’s son. Once word of the proposed acquisition got out, shareholders rebelled, forcing the deal to fall through. The attempted unilateral acquisition, though, opened up a whole host of issues at Satyam with regard to systemic corporate mismanagement, which culminated in Ramalinga’s shameful admission on Wednesday.
