Mandal lives!

I started out with the intention of linking to both sides: blogs that oppose reservations and those which support them. Less than two pages of Google Blog Search results yielded these reactions:

Jasdeep feels reservations won’t undo the damage done by a poor public education system:

Revolutionary changes needs to be done in Education system, But i don’t think there is any step being taken in this direction because this will have long term benefits.

Improvement in Education system would not fetch votes, But Reservations will fetch them quick votes .

We are amused by the way India is progressing , we are amused the way Dhoni’s are fetching crores. We are amused be the way India’s riches has made into the Forbes list.

We don’t care how the other half lives, and Then we are worried about the biggest Internal threat to security are Naxalites. We are amused why they are so evil, we are amused why they can’t be like us.

Rishabh interprets the Supreme Court’s decision as a vindication of YFE’s stand:

I would appreciate the way the students and few young professionals gave their best to fight for the next generation and achieved few things as well. They brought the entire issue in front of the nation and made people aware of the unknown facts.

Saurabh asks:

I have only one thought on my mind. Why did I ever study? All I could have done was wait for this day to come, get a fake certificate by paying a babu some 500 bucks, score less than average on JEE or CAT, get into the best educational institution in India, get a fat pay packet and live happily ever after.

Caliph Obi Hint Jump jumps to a hasty judgement on the wisdom of the people of India:

The problem of why they are incompetent in the first place is not addressed. The primary education system in India will continue to be extremely inadequate. The majority of schools in India will continue to produce stupid students who cannot compete with the privileged few in higher levels of life. And so, they will always need these quotas. And what’s the use? Can 12 years of inadequate primary education be compensated for by 3-4 years of good higher education? Are IITs and IIMs and other colleges magical institutions where retards are turned into geniuses? The stupid people who get admissions into such good colleges through quotas will continue to be stupid, with only a slight decrease in their stupidity. And then after their education, they will again need quotas to get jobs, because their higher education has not cured them of their stupidity; and because they are still unable to compete in the real world. They will be real model stupid citizens of India, and will elect stupid governments, which will ensure that their children go through the same kind of life.

Amit Varma writes a letter to a columnist who says supporting reservations doesn’t amount to a socialist stance:

Well, I wasn’t aware of my caste in my college years, or that of my friends. With prosperity and an open economy, barriers of caste gradually erode. Yes, India has a long, long way to go before we’re prosperous enough and open enough, but consider that reservations actually increase one’s awareness of caste, and exacerbate tensions between them. You cannot fight injustice with injustice.

Perx passes his own verdict- Indian democracy sucks:

We have just proved that Indian politicians have sold their souls to the devil and now just live on votes. They would go to any extent for getting and securing votes. They think that doing good work will not have them elected, but rigging vote booths and saving a vote bank by dividing India will.

Prax has seen the creamy layer, and it travels in chauffeur-driven Mercs:

The Quota System in India has been much abused and i know of instances of very very rich people using it for getting that much coveted engineering /medical admission using the caste certificate. infact when i applied for a normal degree course, i personally witnessed a lady getting out of a chauffeur driven Merc, with her child in tow yelling to the driver to get the file carrying the coveted cast certificate so as to get her daughter that assured bc seat making me wonder about the existence of the genie called the Creamy layer.

Prithwis Mukerjee laments that Mediocrity has finally triumphed over Merit:

The Supreme Court of India — led by the Chief Justice who has been a direct beneficiary of the politics of reservation — has sided with our politicians and have declared that in India, the search for Excellence is over. The IITs and IIMs, that last, albeit shaky bastion, of the intellectual elite has fallen to the powers of the Dark Lord of Venal Populism … from the depths of despair the citizen cries out What Next ?

Where’s the other side? Well, isn’t that the whole point about Mandal?

Caliph Obi Hint Jump did not jump to any “judgement” on anything in his post quoted here. His post, as its title says, was merely a completely insane rant about reservations. Not a sane analysis, but an insane rant. And it was meant to be that way.

…my head has made contact with my desk so many times that my flatmate suggests that I simply glue them together.

Perhaps, for those of us who sit by the computer all day and say that our merit is compromised would always criticise this judgment.
For those who have seen poverty and the way caste discrimination in inherent in it, would think that something must be done on the state’s part for these people. Im sure everyone has expressed our concern for the plight of the slum dwellers or the people who come daily to wash our toilets or clean the railway tracks and stations in bombay every morning.
The mercedes example is mere fiction as the exclusion of the creamy layer would prevent that situation from happening.
