Each howl remembered

Sujai criticizes the attempts to shift focus from the message to the messenger:

In India you can wriggle out of any entanglement, escape any conviction, overturn any evidence, and falsify any logical argument, stultify any rational theory, pooh-pooh any expose, win any argument, calling it ‘politically motivated’.

Gagan expresses similar concerns:

Meanwhile the spin cycle has already begun, the predictable accusations of a Congress Party set-up flung back at the unadorned truth in the video confessions.

Aayur Joshi thinks Tehelka has done a commendable job:

I must say that it definitely brings out one of the worst kept secrets of modern Indian politics, to the forefront after which any kind of denial would look foolhardy. The blatant display of extreme mentality shown by some of the men filmed on the hidden camera is shocking to say the least and does send a shiver down ones spine. Overall a commendable job done by the Tehelka team and we all hope that justice is done to all who suffered in those clinical trials of Hindutva in Gujarat.

Ultra Violet wants all the ‘women’s bodies (that) have been employed as weapons in this war’ to be accounted for, each howl remembered:

After a point, the horrors of the Gujarat genocide can get too much to fathom. The individual voices melt to one shriek. The faces blur into one entity. Too often, words like pogrom and genocide cloud the true meaning of things, make them digestible little pieces of information to be consumed with the morning chai. But the women raped and killed in Gujarat were not a homogenous mass, a category of victimhood or a clever academic term. They were individuals like you and me. Raped, shamed, tortured and slit, cut or broken where it hurt most. Women who laughed, cooked, sang, played with their children, knitted, read. Girls with soft voices or loud laughs, large smiles or small hands, who dreamed of love, freedom and success. Sisters who giggled under the covers after lights out. Daughters who sometimes pouted when they didn’t get their way. Mother. Wives. Friends.

Shoeb Hakim echoes the concerns of many human rights activists: What’s the NHRC doing?

Apurva says the sting is useful but didn’t we have enough evidence already on film?

Tehelka’s coverage is, if anything, courageous. The stings are no revelations but are definitely the best weapons against the Hindutva apologists and deniers of the genocide and the role of Modi’s government in it. But to be fair, videos of people confessing to their crimes have existed. Rakesh Sharma’s Final Solution was a hard hitting documentary on the Parivar and was _banned_ by the then Central Government!
