Why limit subaltern to south-east Asian cinema? The cinematic interventions of a handful of Latin American directors (read Inarittu, Cuaron, Almodovar, Del Toro) signify the coming-of-age of ‘Third World Cinema.’ This body of films interests me because, like the Indian films I have reviewed so far, these films too interrogate conventional cinematic conventions and write ‘back’ to the centre in myriad ways.
Savi Munjal tries to analyse how Guillermo Del Toro’s (1964- ) Pan’s Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno, 2006), as an example of Latin American films ‘that write back to the centre’, conveys the message that the ’subversive cannot be inscribed in common cinematic language’.
