The primacy of politics and the insufficiency of growth

Umakanth V quoting a recent Sunil Khilnani article, says economic growth in ‘insufficient’ to distribute wealth or social justice:

India’s great distinction, historically, is political: the creation, out of material unparalleled both in its diversity and its entrenched hierarchy, of an open society committed to democratic politics, to a pluralism of human life, and to a project of common development. This was the founding idea of India. And one quality of Nehru’s thought whose force remains undeniable today is his insistence on the primacy of politics as we negotiate our differences and unity.

Khilnani seems to forget that politics stopped offering solutions to a large section of India’s marginalized much earlier than 1991.

Khilnani seems to be still stuck in the 60s. The primacy of politics is, in fact proving to be the shackle which is making the country almost ungovernable. The Prime Minister himself has questioned whether the multi-party model adopted by India is capable of providing the unity of purpose needed by the nation.

India today is politically and administratively far worse than the ‘functioning anarchy’ that it has often been called. Morality is not even a factor any more as politicians of all parties willingly rip apart every single norm of civilized behavior in their unbridled greed and lust for perverse, personal political power.

The failures are multi-dimensional. There is a need for bringing about a drastic change in the political system which has clearly failed.

I have written at some length in a number of posts which can be found here for those interested in exploring the subject. http://www.vinodksharma.blogspot.com
