From Paki-bashing to curry-bashing

Whether they are white teenagers in Melbourne, Victoria, of 2009; white lager louts in Leeds, Yorkshire, of 1990; or son-of-the-soil Marathi-speaking shiv sainiks in Mumbai of the 1970s- Joe Pinto says, all of them are driven to hate by sheer ignorance:

Within the first weeks of shopping in July 1990 at the Leeds city centre, we knew that we must avoid going out on Friday and Saturday evenings. The weekly salaries were paid in the markets, latest by 6pm. Then the favourite sport of “Paki-bashing” would begin. First, the lager louts would down some beers with a “vindaloo” or “curry”. Then they would pick upon the Asians — Indians, Pakistanis or Bangladeshis, who ran the restaurants that served the cheap vindaloo and hot curry — all of whom were tarred with the derogatory “Paki!” brush.

Interesting post. I wrote a bit about my own experiences in Melbourne here:
    http://gaddeswarup.blogspot.com/2009/05/indian-students-in-melbourne.html
I felt that many of the kids that botheres us were on the fringe. They would go and drop stones from bridges on passing cars or beg strangers for a few dollars for food or drugs. It is possible that they pick on easy targets. My impression is that many Indian students are lured by recruiters both Indian and from the government to crappy course here mainly to make money. Often they live sharing accomodation with other students in in poor neighbourhoods like Footscray, West Heidelberg (where I lived) where the petty crime rates are high. Many of the students work on odd jobs and it is not always possible to come home at safe times in groups. It would be helpful at recruiting times to give more information about the various neighbourhoods, information about safe travel, course structures job prospects etc. My impression is that many of the students interest in the courses is for immigration later on and really take useless courses in crappy institutions run by people only interested in making money from innocents. Of course there is some racism but it does not seem to be much worse than in many other places.
