“Languages entice me,” he says, “I learn languages to come emotionally close to the people who speak them.” No wonder then that he does not agree with the contention that since Indian languages are rooted in caste society, dalits must leave the vernacular for English. “When Brahmins learn English do they stop behaving like Brahmins?” he asks, and further, “Dalit culture is also rooted in our language. When I write as a dalit I am able to express my emotions best in my mother tongue.”
