Fatwa against terrorism

Sanjukta, whose family had a narrow escape yesterday, reacts to the blasts:

Now why can’t these Imams issue a Fatwa against these terrorist declaring them as non Muslim on the ground that killing innocent people is against Islam. Or at least condemn the killings. Since nothing of that sort ever happens, should we then assume that killing innocent people is NOT against Islam?

Am sure the Hindutva brigade would jump at this now and say, “that’s the whole point we been trying to make for so long”. But let’s not get into that now.

This Hindutva v. Jihad is pure politics, a game of power, which has got nothing to do with the people dying. Those who are dying, whether Hindu or Muslim are neither interested in Hindutva nor in Jihad, they are just regular law abiding peaceful citizen of this country going about their life rather unaware of the dangerous religious politics their leaders are playing all over the world in the name of their religion. They just want to live their life at peace.

[ emphasis mine].

Why can’t these Imams issue a Fatwa? They already have- individual clerics have spoken out on more than one occasion against terrorism, and in one of the biggest gatherings of religious leaders in South Asia (and the world, perhaps) Darul-Uloom (Deoband)  had  condemned terrorism as the ‘most  inhuman crime’.

Sanjukta’s post asks some valid questions, but I wish it didn’t feature this factual inaccuracy.

One of the commenters there has put a counter argument to make others feel how, if such an accusation (why Muslims are silent) is placed upon Hindus, a Hindu would feel. His blog post here – http://doubtengine.blogspot.com/2008/09/what-more-can-we-do.html – also makes some points even though he is very angry there.

    jo,

i’d wanted to ask a similar question- i haven’t seen any hindu gurus/spiritual leaders condemn terrorism in general, forget the acts of bajrang dal, vhp etc.,

It is easy to point fingers..May I ask why majority hindus dn’t find it neccesacry to jusify themselves of their faith, while whole muslims are expected to explain Quran to the slightest part and beg others not to label them as terrorists. Why is this s one-way process?
