More divorces, stronger society

Sneha Krishnan is optimistic that a higher divorce rate could actually be good for Indian society:

This trend may make us a stronger society based less on the facts we brush under the carpet or turn a blind eye to, and more on real experiences and integrity. India long boasted a stable family system. I have personally had teachers talk to women students on the need to “learn to adjust”, so that the Great Indian Family may survive. However, the Great Indian Family is just about as stable as the British Empire in its last days, in the early years of the 20th century. What it needs is to face itself and scoop the sludge out. We may yet turn out to continue to have Great Indian Families – but families now based more on the desire to remain together and the free will to live as one, rather than the societal pressure to do so.
