Children of India

The recent survey on child abuse has opened a Pandora’s Box. Peter Foster has this to say:

Putting the sexual abuse aside for a moment, the most disturbing figures in this survey were those based on gender matters – the role of women and girls in the Indian family set-up.

Almost half – 48.4 per cent – of girls surveyed said they “wished they were boys” which is incredibly sad. Everyone knows about the evils of sex-selective abortion in India, but life can still be very tough for the girls that make it.

Zoey makes a pertinent observation:

I’m a bit skeptical, primarily because none of the stories I’ve read have defined the exact boundaries of physical or sexual abuse, nor have they addressed the issue of methodological rigor.
