A thriving, flourishing media is one of the yardsticks of a thriving flourishing democracy. The media is often described as the watchdog of democracy. But who will watch the watchdogs? In an ideal state of things the media acts as a conduit between the powers that be and the general public, serving as the guardian and the voice of the voiceless. In reality though, today’s Indian media rarely ever live up to this ideal. Thanks to the intense rivalry and competition among the various media houses, they end up pandering to the ratings game.
