On 49 O

At Upperstall blogs, Punjab-da-puttar explains why 49 O is not the answer:

Before blindly propagating people to follow 49 O, one should be aware of the facts. For one, the above law is not yet passed. Not only that; the exact implications of 49 O with reference to declaring a candidate elected are still vague and unclear. Some recent articles have suggested that in case the number of votes recorded under section 49 O is greater than the maximum number of votes polled in favour of any of the candidates, the poll is null and void and a re-poll is held barring the existing candidates from re-contesting. But this is not explicitly mentioned in any of the sections of The Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.

More than what 49 O stands for or implicates, the most dangerous thought spreading here is the idea of NOT voting for anyone. This is the worst thing we can do and especially so in the present scenario. In fact, if anything we MUST vote and what’s more, make our vote count. Have those supporting 49 O realized the implications of very large numbers of people registering such a vote? It could threaten our very political stability if our election results come out as undecided or even non-existent because of it.  Sitting back and saying every politician is rotten and nullifying one’s franchise power is not the answer.

49 O is another example of people washing their hands off. Instead of accepting and working towards cleansing the political and administrative structure we are in a sense just acknowledging and complaining that things are rotten. Unless we get our hands dirty this shit’s ain’t going anywhere.

I am in agreement with Punjab da puttar regarding 49-o. This is not the answer. The election commission has PROPOSED to the Government an amendment to the rules that will provide a “none of the above” option in the ballot paper. (Do you see any politician agreeing to such a proposal?) It would be great if such a proposal came through, and it would be even better if everyone on that ballot paper should be disqualified, at least for two or three more elections, if “none of the above” won the ballot.

“None of the above” Zindabad !

    regards
    George
