National Girl Child Day gaffes

Not just including Major General Tanvir Ahmed’s (Pakistan’s Army) picture in an ad by the Government of India, but the Dreamer also questions why there are no women achievers on that collage:

Even if we do accept the Hon.Minister’s explanation, there is something really wrong with this picture, in my humble opinion. The caption boldly asks “Where would you be if your mother was not allowed to be born?” And accompanying it are pictures of four men! The makers of the ad, whoever they are, were broadminded enough to include the picture of a man from a neighbouring country, but for some unfathomable reason were unable to find one female achiever to feature in the ad purportedly for the welfare of the girl child.

    One really wonders,what one gets from sensationalizing the issues and causes.Instead of feeling pain for the genuine human concern,the discourse begins on new issues that normally has nothing to do with the basic human rights and needs.Sad enough.That is what post modern ias all about. We all suffer from trust deficit.Trust and dialouge are are the implicit logic of social capital.

    i don’t think it is about not feeling the pain. people have a right to be offended if their leaders show incompetence. and certainly this was a big blunder and sheer show of incompetence by the people concerned who are paid by the taxes that paid by common people.

    Once again media and market are toeing the line of power. It is the discourse of power that constructs the discourse. Girl child debates is now being turned to political culture, bad governance and may be some thing sensational, which common person like us would not be able to deconstruct,’as flies to wanton boys, same we to these gods’.

    I don’t understand your point, Ashok. Sensationalized or not, this issue must be raised before significant demographic problems grow out of control.

    I think women were omitted out of basic chauvinism. Not only are women socially valued less than men; it is presumed that ONLY a man would want to kill off a daughter, but that is not true. If there was a genuine respect for life (rather than “tradition”), we would all be better for it.

    see Ashok, im not from india but even i can see that it is because the advertisement was so badly made that it failed to deliver the message and leave any impact. on the otehr hand, it hurt the sentiments of the common man of india. it is pretty simply. in fact, it is your philosophy that is quite complicated. any person with some intellect would have gone for successful indian women’s pictures to give the message that if you give your daughters the chance to flourish without any discrimination she could also be one of them. i think it is stupid to think that the image of former PAF chief was selected because the makers were broad minded. i don’t think even the broad minded indians would agree with the choice. it is nothing but a blunder.

    I think the reason that there are no women appearing in the ad is to make a point. That these men, who are looked up to, would not be around if their mothers had been aborted. If a girl is not allowed to live then it is presumed that she will never give birth to the next great cricketer or leader of the country. It is not a slight to women. It is making a point.

    n any order making, religious packages before sixteenth century or Modern packages after eighteenth century, the position of woman was always marginalized. In any package women were missing. It was always race, class and patriarchy. It was only in late sixty’s of the previous century after the collapse of Functional, second wave feminism made women beyond division of labor and gender replaced sex. Now after the c b I wonder, if you look bankruptcy of Marxism, the new global world has also marginalized women. Human production is less valued than commodity production. Women at best are at middle rung positions .On Top positions, their visibility is rare. This is general reflection all over the world. However, the new social and political consciousness has made these issues more forcefully felt. Public has become private and private public. Unfortunately even then, the power realm diverges it with non issues. We must understand the subjectivity of history rather than its discourse. Instead of thinking about a girl child issue, we would invent communal strife and make people to debate over it. The authors have capacity to make us partners in their game plan, critics or non critics!

    @sabina
    whatever the message an add aims at conveying is supposed to be clear. if people have to guess things then there is something seriously wrong with it.

    The New Social Movements are based on moral content, may it be sustainable development, environment issues, girl child, or gender concerns. These movements are not bound by the geo graphical ranges,it transced national boundaries. If dealt properly and delinked with power realm, it is a ongoing human project, where institutions and human agencies have role to play. We need not miss such moral issues in the nation-state debates, when it is beyond state interventions to find remedy.
